Summer Trip 2006

Day 8 Iron Mt, MI to Escanaba, MI to Mackinaw City, MI

Mileage: 195 miles

Weather: Mostly raining and clearing latter in the day.

DAY 8

It started raining first thing this morning.  I went online to check the weather radar.  It was not good news.  We decided to wait until the rain passed before beginning the days ride.  The worst part was that the front was moving in the same direction we had to go so we ended up riding in the rain for the first three to four hours of the day.  While we prefer nice weather and dry pavement, I need the experience riding in these conditions.

Many of you will think we get soaking wet riding in the rain but in reality we don't get all that wet.  The biggest challenge for me is visibility.  I generally slow down a bit due to the reduced availability of traction, avoid the painted surfaces and the wet tar snakes.

We stopped about 10:00 AM for breakfast and about and hour and a half later took a long coffee break.  We had ridden through the entire weather front and had dry conditions the remainder of the day.  We packed away the rain gear and we were completely dry in just a few miles of riding.

It was such a thrill to see the Mackinaw Bridge in the distance.  One we have come all the way from Oregon to Michigan in seven days and two it is a beautiful bridge.  Our motel is called the Lighthouse View Motel and looks right out over the water at the bridge.  It is exceptionally clean and nice, and privately owned.

We spent the rest of the day being tourists. Tomorrow we plan to take the boat to Mackinaw Island.
