Weather: Warm and windy later in the day!

DAY 17

Monday, July 3, 2006

We got off to an early start this morning.  We were on the road shortly after 7:00 AM.  This was partly due to Bird and Bob's work schedule but we also were ready to get on the move again.  We dropped south until we reached US 14 and we rode 14 all the rest of the day.  Anytime you go from MN through eastern SD you go through a major transition, from lush fields of green and very humid air to brown grass and very dry air.

We traveled through Laura Ingalls Wilder country all day and did the small towns milk this for what it was worth!  They tried to do anything they could to get you off the highway and stop in their town.

We had lunch in a gas station with a four table eating area.  We both ordered the special which was a hamburger.  The lady pulled out hamburg, shaped a paddy and grilled it and sliced a homemade bun in half along with fresh lettuce and tomato, we had a great lunch.  There were 5-6 locals in there eating as well.  You just never know when you will discover a diamond in the rough.  Dinner was just as unusual, we ate in a combination restaurant used car dealership.  I have never seen anything like it.  I thought the restaurant was closed and had been taken over by a car dealer but by the time Barb and I had finished eating and left, the restaurant was almost full with more, albeit senior citizens, being dropped off for dinner.  Yes, I'm a big spender! No I did not qualify for the senior discount!

Tomorrow we head for Rapid City, SD.  Tonight they are expected to have lightening and thundershowers.  The lady at the desk told Barb the low tonight is supposed to be 50.  I would love that but I'll believe it when I feel it.
