Day: 40
Date: Friday, August 1, 2003
Miles Ridden: 75
From: Port Huron, Michigan
To: London, Ontario, Canada
Today we crossed into Ontario. We assembled outside the motel. Mike had made arrangements for us to all cross together so we all wore our ride jerseys. We looked really sharp, see the picture files. It was a bit of a climb up to the bridge. We could not see much due to the fog. When we crossed the bridge the authorities closed all lanes of traffic heading into Canada until we completed our crossing. There were two large expansion joints that we crossed by lifting our bikes over them. My entire wheel would fit between each joint. One rider fell down during the bridge crossing but was not hurt. As we crossed, drivers coming from the other direction were honking their horns and waving at us. I guess this is not a sight you see every day.
The main word that describes the day is humid! We were soaked most of the day due to the humidity. The route today was mostly flat and we had a bit of headwind, but for some reason it was hard work for everyone on Team Stop-A- Lot. We all took turns pulling and as we rotated back, we all made comments like, I just dont have it today. I think it was mainly due to the heavy damp air.
Most of the countryside looked just like Michigan or Wisconsin. We saw some tobacco and peanut crops, I was told later by Mike, but otherwise today was like any of the past four or five days.
We had one detour due to road construction that took us on a few miles of gravel roads through farmland. We eventually arrived at our motel at about 1:00 PM. Since we all wore our ride jerseys, many people took more notice of us. Since Team Stop-A-Lot rides in a pace line much of the time, people honked car horns and waved to us more today than prior days. We felt a bit like celebrities.
It is supposed to rain hard tonight, so well see what tomorrow brings. We are scheduled to ride 60 some miles so we will get to sleep in a bit, until 6:00 AM. Loading is at 7:00 AM. One more night in Canada and then we are back in the USA. Thanks again for joining me. See you on the road tomorrow.
