Miles Ridden: 7 (A ferry ride)

From: Manitowoc, Wisconsin

To: Mount Pleasant, Michigan

Today was a day that I have been looking forward to since I signed up for the trip. You’ll see why as you continue to read this narrative.

We got to sleep in this morning. I awoke at the usual 4:30 AM. I went to the bathroom and told my self I need to sleep some more. Usually this doesn’t work for me but today, the next thing I knew it was 6:30 AM. I started the coffee in my room, turned on the TV and sat in bed and ate a pop tart and had a cup of coffee. What a luxury! It felt so good to be conscious and resting as opposed to sleeping and resting. A little later I cleaned up and went for a continental breakfast in the motel. We loaded our luggage at 9:00 AM and afterwards Dan, Steve, and I walked to a Perkins Restaurant for the real breakfast. While eating a rather large cinnamon roll, my tooth fell out. It was a crown that had been built on a root canal; I now have the tooth and long spike in my suitcase. I know this is more than you need to know, but other things happen on the ride besides riding.

After breakfast we returned to the motel, met Mary and her mom, Jeanne, and placed some items in Jeanne’s car. Then the four of us left for the ferry landing, three miles away. It was a beautiful day with a light breeze blowing off Lake Michigan. We had to be there an hour early so I took a lot of pictures of the harbor area. The beauty of the lake will speak for itself.

This ferry boat is the same boat I rode on when I crossed with my family at age 10 or 11. As I got on the boat I started to remember some of the boat’s details. This was a bit like returning to my childhood.

The boat ride was wonderful. It was 4 hours long and very restful. I fell asleep in a chair with my head bobbing from time to time. When we arrived in Michigan we had our last time change of the trip. I am now on Eastern Time. We rode 4.5 miles to the motel and immediately found a place to eat dinner. By the time we finished dinner and I got back to the motel, it was 9:00 PM. We have 115 miles to ride tomorrow and have to get up at 4:15 AM, so I am in a hurry to get into bed and get to sleep.

It was a restful and beautiful day.
